مقدمه: پنومونی وابسته به ونتیلاتور یک عفونت بیمارستانی شایع در بیمارانی است که در بخش‌های مراقبت ویژه بستری می‌شود که منجر به اقامت طولانی در بخش ویژه، افزایش هزینه‌های بیمارستانی و مورتالیتی می‌شود.
هدف: بررسی تأثیر اکالیپتوس استنشاقی بر پنومونی وابسته به ونتیلاتور در بیماران تحت تهویه‌ی مکانیکی.
روش بررسی: این یک مطالعه از نوع کارآزمایی بالینی تصادفی است که در آن 70 بیمار که بیش از 72 ساعت تحت تهویه مکانیکی قرار داشتند با نمونه‌گیری هدفمند وارد مطالعه شده و به طور تصادفی در دو گروه اکالیپتوس استنشاقی (35 نفر) و دارونما (35 نفر) قرار گرفتند. بیماران گروه اکالیپتوس 4 میلی‌لیتر از اکالیپتوس 5 درصد در 6 میلی‌لیتر نرمال سالین در زمانی که تحت تهویه مکانیکی قرار داشتند، استنشاق نمودند و به بیماران گروه دارونما، فقط مقدار 10 میلی‌لیتر نرمال سالین به همان صورت داده می‌شد پنومونی وابسته به ونتیلاتور در روز پنجم، نهم و قبل از خارج‌سازی لوله تراشه بر اساس معیار بالینی عفونت ریوی تعدیل شده سنجیده شد.
نتایج: میانگین و انحراف معبار مدت زمان لوله‌گذاری در جمعیت مورد مطالعه 75/3 ± 4/9 (با دامنه 14-3) روز بود. پنومونی وابسته به ونتیلاتور در 10 بیمار گروه اکالیپتوس استنشاقی (5/28 درصد) و 23 بیمار گروه دارونما (7/65 درصد) دیده شد (004/0P = ). مدت لوله‌گذاری در بیمارانی که به پنومونی مبتلا شده بودند، بیشتر از بیماران غیر مبتلا بود (001/0 =P ).
نتیجه‌گیری: استنشاق اکالیپتوس می‌تواند پنومونی وابسته به ونتیلاتور را در بیماران تحت تهویه‌ی مکانیکی کاهش دهد.
