امروزه استفاده از داروهای گیاهی در طی سال‌های اخیر برای درمان بیماری‌ها رو به افزایش بوده و مهم‌ترین علت استفاده آن اثبات اثرات مخرب و جانبی داروهای شیمیایی است. جنس دارویی وکسینوم از گیاهان پرطرفدار می‌باشد که هر روز بر ارزش دارویی، غذایی و صنعتی این گیاه افزوده می‌شود، 100 گونه از این جنس در دنیا پراکنش دارد و قره‌قاط با نام علمی Vaccinium arctostaphlyus تنها گونه موجود در ایران می‌باشد که در 6 نقطه از ایران گزارش شده است. مهم‌ترین متابولیت‌های موجود در برگ و میوه قره‌قاط را فنل‌ها بویژه سیانوزیدها تشکیل می‌دهند که دارای خاصیت آنتی‌اکسیدانی می‌باشند. میوه‌های قره‌قاط حاوی 30 درصد قند، 5/15 درصد پروتئین، 5/1 درصد چربی و سرشاخه‌ها حاوی هگزا دکانوئیک اسید، تیس پیرن، بتا یونن و ساندراکوپیمارادینن می‌باشد. در طب سنتی ایران دم کرده میوه در کاهش قند خون و فشار خون توصیه و مصرف می‌شود. قره‌قاط اثر آنتی‌باکتریال دارد و در درمان عفونت مثانه به کار می‌رود. به علت داشتن ترکیبات آنتی سیانوسیدی به تشکیل مویرگ‌های قوی‌تر کمک می‌کند و کاهش چسبندگی پلاکت خون را سبب می‌شود. امروزه با پیشرفت چشمگیر علوم بیوتکنولوژی از جمله کشت بافت، دسترسی به کیفیت و کمیت بالا در محصولات این جنس افزایش یافته است. جنس وکسینوم و گونه دارویی قره‌قاط در ایران دارای ارزش اقتصادی بوده و نیازمند مطالعه و پژوهش بیشتر برای افزایش سطح کشت، تولید محصولات دارویی و غذایی از این گیاه دارویی می‌باشد.
